GST Amount₹ 0.00
Total Amount₹ 0.00

How to Use This Calculator

Using the GST calculator takes less than a minute. First, enter the transaction amount in rupees — this can be either the pre-tax price or a price that already includes GST. Next, choose the calculation mode: select "Add GST" if your amount is before tax (you want the gross price), or "Remove GST" if your invoice amount already includes GST (you want the taxable value and tax component).

Then select the applicable GST rate — 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%. Most services fall under 18%, while essential goods are at 5% and luxury items at 28%. Finally, choose the supply type: intra-state (buyer and seller in the same state, which splits the tax into CGST and SGST) or inter-state (different states, which charges IGST). Click Calculate GST to see the base amount, tax amount and total instantly.

Worked Example

Here is a real-world example of how the calculation works:

Example: A freelance designer invoices ₹10,000 for services (18% GST, intra-state)

Base amount (your fee)₹ 10,000.00
GST @ 18%₹ 1,800.00
CGST @ 9%₹ 900.00
SGST @ 9%₹ 900.00
Total invoice value₹ 11,800.00

If instead the client pays you ₹11,800 inclusive of GST, switch the mode to "Remove GST" and the calculator will show the ₹10,000 base and the ₹1,800 tax embedded in the payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different GST rates in India?
India has five GST slabs: 0% (essential items like fresh food), 5% (household necessities, small restaurants), 12% (processed food, business-class air travel), 18% (most services, electronics, financial services) and 28% (luxury goods, automobiles, five-star hotels). A compensation cess may apply on some 28% items like cars and tobacco.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
For supplies within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST, goes to the Centre) and SGST (State GST, goes to the state). For supplies between states (inter-state), a single IGST (Integrated GST) is charged, later apportioned between Centre and destination state. The total rate remains the same in both cases.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive amount by (1 + rate/100). For example, ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST gives a base of ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000, and GST of ₹1,800. Use the "Remove GST" mode in this calculator to do it instantly.
When do I need to register for GST?
Registration is mandatory when aggregate turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh for services, ₹10 lakh in special category states) in a financial year. Inter-state suppliers and e-commerce sellers must register regardless of turnover. Voluntary registration is allowed for any business.
What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?
ITC lets registered businesses reduce the GST they collected from customers (output tax) by the GST they already paid on purchases (input tax), paying only the difference to the government. ITC is claimed in GSTR-3B and requires matching invoices in GSTR-2B under the current zero-mismatch rules.
